PHNOM PENH – In a strategic move to revitalize the tourism sector and bolster the national economy, Cambodia has announced a pilot four-month visa exemption for Chinese nationals starting in 2026. This initiative is a cornerstone of the “Cambodia–China Tourism Year 2025–2026” framework, aimed at attracting a new wave of international visitors.
Boosting the “Green Season” Economy
The exemption is specifically designed to support economic activity during the “green season,” a period that typically sees a slowdown in tourist arrivals. Officials described the move as a “historic milestone” in the bilateral relationship between Cambodia and China. By removing travel barriers, the government expects a significant uptick in hospitality revenue, local spending, and cross-border investment.
Strengthening SMEs and Industry 4.0
Parallel to tourism efforts, the Kingdom is making strides in industrial modernization. The Mekong-Lancang cooperation project, which focused on strengthening Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and technical cooperation under the Industry 4.0 framework, successfully concluded this week.
This project is vital for Cambodia’s long-term business strategy, as it equips local entrepreneurs with the digital tools and innovation necessary to compete in a globalized market, particularly in food product development and manufacturing.
New Financial Strategy Targets 5% Growth
The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has also launched the ‘Financial Sector Development Strategy 2025-2030’. Developed with technical support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), this roadmap aims to sustain a 5.0% economic growth rate for the coming year.
Despite global headwinds, including potential US tariffs and regional geopolitical tensions, the strategy focuses on:
- Export Diversification: Reducing reliance on traditional sectors.
- Fintech Adoption: Encouraging businesses to move toward digital payments (Bakong, KHQR).
- Infrastructure Investment: Supporting special economic zones like the ISI SEZ, which is expected to see new factory operations by mid-2026.
