Major Event Brings Together Key Economic Stakeholders
The event, co-organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia (YEAC) and the Global Entrepreneurship Network Cambodia, brought together approximately 300 entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to discuss Cambodia’s economic transformation and resilience.
The celebration comes at a crucial time as Cambodia works toward its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and achieving high-income status by 2050.
Minister Highlights Entrepreneurs’ Critical Role Amid Regional Challenges
At the opening ceremony, Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Khmer Enterprise, emphasized the vital role of Cambodian entrepreneurs during regional supply chain disruptions, including those caused by recent Cambodia-Thailand border tensions.
“During this supply-chain shift, it is our local entrepreneurs who step forward, adapt quickly, and expand production and services,” Minister Vanndy stated, praising Cambodian business leaders for their resilience and adaptability in challenging times.
Entrepreneurship Key to Economic Graduation
The minister noted that Cambodia is scheduled to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by the end of 2029, and the resilience of local enterprises will be critical both for successful graduation and for avoiding the middle-income trap.
This graduation represents a significant milestone in Cambodia’s development journey, requiring sustained economic growth and business innovation across all sectors.
Vision 2030: Cambodia’s Economic Transformation Plan
Cambodia’s Vision 2030 represents an ambitious roadmap for economic development that aims to:
- Transform economic status: Achieve upper-middle-income country status by 2030
- Build resilience: Strengthen local businesses to withstand global economic shocks
- Promote innovation: Encourage technology adoption and entrepreneurial thinking
- Create jobs: Expand employment opportunities through business growth
- Enhance competitiveness: Improve Cambodia’s position in regional and global markets
According to government projections, Cambodia’s GDP per capita, which stood at approximately $1,917 in 2023, needs to reach between $4,256 and $13,205 to achieve upper-middle-income status under World Bank classification standards.
Supporting Startup Ecosystem and Innovation
The entrepreneurship day celebration underscores government efforts to cultivate a vibrant startup ecosystem and empower Cambodians to innovate in the digital age. These efforts align with Cambodia’s Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Roadmap 2030, which aims to build a favorable business ecosystem.
Key focus areas include:
- Strengthening access to finance for entrepreneurs
- Developing digital skills and capabilities
- Promoting technology transfer and adoption
- Supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
- Encouraging youth entrepreneurship
Building Economic Resilience
The emphasis on entrepreneurship comes as Cambodia navigates various economic challenges, including global supply chain disruptions, regional trade dynamics, and the ongoing transition from LDC status. Local entrepreneurs are increasingly viewed as pillars of market stability and drivers of economic confidence.
Minister Vanndy’s remarks highlighted how Cambodian business owners have demonstrated remarkable adaptability, quickly adjusting operations and expanding services to meet changing market conditions during periods of regional uncertainty.
Path Forward: Investment and Innovation
The “Invest for the Future” theme reflects the government’s recognition that achieving Vision 2030 will require sustained investment in human capital, infrastructure, technology, and innovation. The event provided a platform for entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to explore opportunities for collaboration and discuss strategies for sustainable growth.
As Cambodia continues its development journey, the entrepreneurial community is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving economic diversification, creating quality employment, and building a more resilient and competitive economy.
